Our history

The University of Sussex has had its own branch of the British Sub Aqua Club for over 30 years. Originally there was another club based at the University of Brighton but since its closure in the 1990s Brighton students have been welcome to join USSAC. Over the years the club has trained hundreds of students to dive and has been supported by qualified divers from the University staff and the local community. Back in the 1980s university clubs were one of the only affordable ways for young people to learn to scuba dive in the UK. More recently USSAC has seen its membership grow due to crossovers from other diving agencies such as PADI and seen its membership become increasingly international. What has not changed is the club's commitment to promoting safe and fun UK diving and enabling students to make the most of their time at a coastal university.
